Three reasons identified for ineffectiveness of Gonoshasthaya kits: BSMMU VC

DHAKA, June 17, 2020 (BSS) – Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Prof Dr Kanak Kanti Barua today said kits developed by Gonoshasthaya Kendra are not effective to detect coronavirus of suspected cases.

“Three reasons have been identified for ineffectiveness of Gonoshasthaya Kendra developed kits to detect COVID-19 cases with suspected symptoms,” he told a press conference at the Miltan Hall of BSMMU here.

BSMMU Pro-Vice Chancellor (education) Dr Sahana Akhtar Rahman, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Muhammad Rafiqul Alam and Pro-Vice Chancellor (research and development), among others, were present at the press conference.

Explaining the three reasons, Dr Kanak said kits developed by Gonoshasthaya Kendra are not effective to test the people with suspected symptoms of COVID-19.

He said eleven percent patients could get accurate results of coronavirus using Gonoshasthaya Kendra kits, if they are tested within one week after developing symptoms while 40 percent patients could get accurate results of the virus within two weeks of their symptoms.

Gonoshasthaya Kendra kits could be used for 70 percent coronavirus patients after three weeks of their infections, the BSMMU VC said.
