CHATTOGRAM, June 15, 2020 (BSS) – The government and different individuals as well as organisations have come forward with time-betting initiatives to ensure treatment facilities for corona patients in Chattogram city.

Awami League (AL) leaders, including ministers, CCC mayor and members of parliaments, in collaboration with different individuals and organisations are involved in almost all the initiatives as some allegations were raised regarding corona treatment facilities including insufficient hospital and severe crisis of ICU beds.

It is known from reliable sources that these efforts have been taken by the initiative and request of Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Jabed, Deputy Minister for Education Barrister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury Nawfel and CCC Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin to fight against corona pandemic.

The Information Minister has recently inaugurated Corona Unit at Private Imperial Hospital, Chattogram Ma-O-Shisu Hospital and Bangabandhu Memorial Hospital of USTC so that common people can get proper treatment for coronavirus infection.

Dr Hasan also inaugurated a 250-bed Covid-19 isolation centre at City Convention Centre located in city’s Agrabad Access road area.

Responding request of City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, managing director of Secom Group Amirul Haque gave permission to CCC to use the City Convention Centre as a complete isolation centre, said the sources.

While talking to BSS, City Mayor Nasir hoped that the admission of patients to the isolation centre will begin from June 16 or 17.

The CCC mayor said corona patients with mild symptoms will be admitted to City Convention where various facilities, including central oxygen supply system, will be ensured.

Speaking at the inaugural function of the isolation centre, Dr Hasan said, “Initially there was a crisis in the treatment of corona patients in Chattogram city. It is not that the crisis is over yet, some crisis is still prevailing. But under the direction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, we have been trying from the beginning to motivate various private hospitals to further expand facilities for corona treatment.”

“A total of 150 beds with 10 ventilations at General Hospital, 100 beds with 10 ventilations at USTC Bangabandhu Memorial Hospital, 100 beds in Maa-o- Shishu Hospital with four ventilations, 120 beds at Imperial Hospital with 20 ventilators and 50 beds at private hospitals have been set up to ensure treatment for corona patients,” he added.

Apart from this, a 250-bed central oxygen supply line at cost of Tk 84.75 lakh at Chattogram General Hospital is being set up by S Alam Group for the treatment of corona patients.

It is expected that work on central oxygen supply line at the hospital will be finished with the next 15 days.

Deputy Minister for Education Barrister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury Nawfel has taken initiative to introduce uninterrupted oxygen supply system at Holy Crescent Hospital.

He also visited the treatment preparation activities at Holy Crescent Hospital in Khulshi on Saturday and learned about the oxygen crisis there. He requested former city mayor M Manjurul Alam, also owner of Golden Oxygen Limited, to arrange immediate oxygen facility at the hospital.

Former mayor Manzur Alam told BSS that regular oxygen supply would be provided to the hospital soon.

Deputy Minister of Education Barrister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury has given Tk 3 lakh as a grant to motivate the temporary staff working at Chattogram General Hospital, the sources added.
