Signal 4 for maritime ports, cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’ likely to intensify

DHAKA, May 17, 2020 (BSS) – Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s
Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to hoist local warning
signal number four as cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’ is likely to intensify
further and move in a north-northwesterly direction.

“The severe cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’ over the southeast bay and
adjoining southwest bay moved slightly northwards over the same area,”
the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said in a special
weather bulleting this evening.

The cyclonic storm was centered at 6pm today about 1305km
south-southwest of Chattogram port, 1240km south-southwest of Cox’s
Bazar port, 1230km south-southwest of Mongla port and 1210km
south-southwest of Payra port, the bulletin added.

“It is likely to intensify further and move in a north-northwesterly
direction,” the met office said, adding maximum sustained wind speed
within 64 km of the severe cyclone centre is about 89kph rising to
117kph in gusts or squalls.

Sea will remain very rough near the severe cyclone centre. All
fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay and deep sea have been
advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till
further notice, so that they can take shelter within a short notice.

They have also been advised not to venture into the deep sea.
