ACC goes tough against corruption in relief distribution

DHAKA, April 10, 2020 (BSS) – The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has
decided to engage its workforce countrywide in length and breadth to check
any corruption or irregularity in relief goods distribution during the period
of shutdown enforced since March 26 to slow the spread of coronavirus
outbreak.

The country’s lone anti-graft watchdog ACC’s chairman Iqbal Mahmood sounded
the note of warning of taking legal action in case of any wrongdoing to this
end.

“The country’s Constitution wouldn’t allow anyone to devour income from
unknown sources,” he said in a statement issued here today.

It said the ACC’s all integrated district offices would coordinate the
relief goods distribution under the government’s social safety net programme
in coordination with local administrations to check corruption and
irregularities to this respect.

The decision came days after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina vowed to take
tougher actions against the relief material plunderers without showing any
mercy.

In the statement, the commission also said they took the decision following
media reports and information gathered by its own intelligence wing regarding
misappropriation of relief materials at different parts of the country.

In this context, the ACC chairman said no mercy will be shown in case of
corruption in the social safety net programme.

The people who are found indulged in amassing wealth beyond known sources
of income by plundering the relief materials must face the music, he warned.

Besides, the law enforcement agencies have captured many people including
local public representatives from different parts of the country on charges
of stealing relief materials.
