Hasan for increasing reading habit among youths

CHATTOGRAM, Feb 10, 2020 (BSS)- Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said the new generation should be encouraged to develop their habit of reading creative books as a healthy generation can only develop a nation.

“Our aim is to build a developed nation by 2041 . . . For this, we need a healthy generation who can lead the nation,” he said, addressing the inaugural function of Amar Ekushey Book Fair at MA Aziz Stadium in the port city.

The minister said Bangabandhu’s daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has envisioned to build the nation equipping it with economic prosperity, merit and collective intelligence by 2041.

“We could achieve the target before the fixed time. The nation would go towards more progress during the last 11 years if there were no negative or confrontational politics,” he added.

Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) organized the fair dedicating it to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman marking the Mujib Year.

CCC Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin presided over the inaugural function.

Hasan said the two city corporation polls of Dhaka city were held recently. “But, we saw that BNP went to foreign diplomats to make complaints. Thus, they insulted the voters of Dhaka city, the people of the country and the state as well. If they have any complaint they could go to the Election Commission or court,” he added.

Even, he said, they (BNP) could go to the voters. But they went to foreign diplomats and tarnished the image of the state in a similar fashion they did in the past, he added.

The minister said BNP would like to give a scope to the foreigners to interfere in internal issues of Bangladesh, which is not honourable for the state.

He urged the BNP leaders not to do such activities as those tantamount to disgrace for the country.

Thanking the CCC authority for holding the book fair for the second time in the port city, Hasan said book fairs were held here separately in the past.

“For this, the common people were not interested. But now, the city dwellers are interested as the book fair is being held in a combined way,” said Hasan, also Awami League joint general secretary.

The minister hoped that the book fair will be held on a wider scale in future.

He said the domain of science and technology in the world has witnessed a marvelous development and the people of the globe are becoming dependent on technology.

“The people are becoming self-centered and they have lost their humane. So, we should more conscious about the future generation so that they would grow up with humanity. For this, they (young generation) should develop their reading habit,” Hasan added.

“Books help men to know themselves and give lessons to become conscious in purifying the society,” he said.

CCC chief executive officer Shamsudoha gave welcome address in the function while councilor Nazmul Haque Duke and Freedom Fighter Shah Alam Nipu, among others, addressed it.

Earlier, the minister inaugurated the 20-day long book fair.
