DHAKA, Feb 6, 2020 (BSS) – Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi today said onion price in local market would not be impacted by coronavirus due to sufficient supply.

“We import a very small amount of onion from China but at present supply of locally produced onion is sufficient in the market and that is why the ongoing issue would not affect onion price,” he said while talking to journalists at his secretariat office.

The minister said the government is working with utmost priority to a permanent solution of the problem by producing required onion locally than depending on import.

“If we can ensure appropriate price, our farmers would be encouraged in producing more onion and subsequently export of onion will be possible within next three years,” he opined.

Tipu revealed that the government is also mulling to preserve onion alongside boost production.

The minister also said they are working to offset any type of manipulation on onion in the market.” Stern action would be taken if anyone’s involvement in malpractice is found,” he added.

Commerce Secretary Dr Md Jafar Uddin was present.
