BNP, AL supporters clash over polls campaign
DHAKA, Jan 26, 2020 (BSS) – Supporters of BNP-backed mayoral candidate for DSCC polls Ishraque Hossain and Awami League nominated councilor candidate Rokonuddin Ahmed engaged in clashes in the city’s Gopibagh area leaving at least ten people injured.
“The incident took place at Abhoy Das Lane of Gopibagh area,” DMP Wari Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shah Iftekhar Ahmed told BSS.
Mayoral candidate Ishraque Hossain was scheduled to carry out his election campaign at 5pm in Wari area but he started his campaign around 12:55 pm.
At one stage of his campaign, Ishraque, along with 300 of his followers, was crossing Rokonuddin’s electoral campaign near Central Women’s College area and suddenly they started hurling abusive words to the supporters of Rokonuddin chanting the slogans- ‘destroy boat, leave boat, come to sheaf of paddy’, said DC Iftekhar.
The supporters of Rokonuddin asked them to stop such slogans and leave the area but Ishraque’s supporters attacked the supporters of Rokonuddin and vandalized his makeshift election-office, Iftekhar added.
Being informed, police rushed to the spot and bring the situation under control. Police also recovered some shells of bullets, he added.
None was arrested in this connection.
