JS adopts obituary reference on lawmaker Mannan

SANGSAD BHABAN, Jan 19, 2020 (BSS) – The Jatiya Sangsad today unanimously adopted an obituary reference on Awami League (AL) lawmaker Abdul Mannan.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury moved the obituary reference with brief resume on former AL organizing secretary Mannan.

While moving the reference, the Speaker said the House expresses its deep shock at the death of lawmaker Abdul Mannan, who breathed his last in the early morning of Saturday at a city hospital in the capital at the age of 66.

Later a discussion was held on the obituary motion adopted on Abdul Mannan while the lawmakers recalled his contributions to the politics and society terming him as a skilled organizer enriched with humanitarian values.

Leader of the House Sheikh Hasina recalled Mannan’s contributions to politics and different democratic movements during adverse situation in the country after 1975 and said he was one of those student leaders who had played a strong role that time.

Treasury bench lawmakers Abdur Razzaque, AB Tazul Islam, Anwarul Abedin Khan, Nazrul Islam Babu, Md Muslem Uddin, Mrinal Kanti Das, Vice-Principal Abdus Shahid, Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Shajahan Khan, SM Rezaul Karim, Mohammed Nasim, Tofail Ahmed, Matia Chowdhury, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim and Amir Hossain Amu, Gono Forum lawmaker Sultan Mohammad Mansur Ahmed and Jatiya Party lawmakers Md Mashiur Rahman Ranga and Pir Fazlur Rahman took part in the discussion.

Taking part in the discussion, Sultan Mohammad Mansur Ahmed recalled contributions of Abdul Mannan in different democratic movements, including movements against Ziaur Rahman and H M Ershad and said Abdul Mannan played a pivotal role in strengthening the party during the adverse situations in the country.

Terming Mannan as a meritorious and hard working leader, Zunaid Ahmed Palak said he (Mannan) was a people and activists-oriented leader. “He will remain as an inspiration for us as an honest and brave leader,” Palak added.

Abdur Razzaque said Mannan was a devoted worker of Bangabandhu. He built resistances against those who wanted to destroy the country during the military regimes after assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman after 1975, Razzaque added.

Mohammed Nasim said Abdul Mannan was one of the young leaders who waged movements and struggled standing besides Sheikh Hasina after 1975.

The mass wave for AL which has been created in the constituency like Bagura led by Mannan was a rare incident, Nasim said, adding it was possible by him as he was a very popular leader.

Recalling his memories with Mannan, Tofail Ahmed said, “After 1975, Mannan everyday joined anti-military government procession and picketing with us”. He played a pivotal role in strengthening AL’s activities in Bagura, Tofail added.

Matia Chowdhury said, “Mannan was younger than us in terms of age. But he sat besides us with his works”.

It was very hard for him to organize the students as a student leader as he had hailed from a farmer family, she said, adding but he did the task very efficiently.

Dubbing Mannan a very skilled politician, Amir Hossain Amu said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had picked Mannan as the BCL’s central president only for his organizational efficiency.

The House also sought eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family members. The lawmakers also observed one-minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed soul.

Later, a munajat was offered seeking eternal peace of the departed soul. After the munajat, as convention, the Speaker adjourned the sitting of the House to show respect at the death of a current parliament member Abdul Mannan.

Mannan served as the president of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). He was elected parliament member thrice from Bogura in 2008, 2014 and 2018.
