Amissi’s brace steers Burundi to semifinal

DHAKA, Jan 18, 2020 (BSS) – Skipper Tambwe Amissi scored a brace as Burundi came from behind to beat Seychelles by 3-1 goals to confirm the spot of semifinal from group B of the Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football tournament held on Saturday at Bangabandhu National Stadium here.

With this win, Burundi secured six points to emerge group B champions following their 4-1 goals victory over Mauritius in their group B opening match.

Burundi will now play against group A runners-up either Bangladesh or Sri Lanka in the second semifinal scheduled to be held on January 23 at the same venue.

Seychelles will play their group B last match against Mauritius on Monday (January 20).

Earlier, Palestine as a first team from Group A champions already confirmed their sport of last four berths.

Seychelles dominated the first half in the match but they failed to keep the tempo in the second half resulted they had to concede defeat on the day despite taking the lead.

Seychelles launched the attack in the 15th minute but Colin Bibi’s left footer powerful shot from top of the D box sailed harmlessly over the cross bar.

However forward Perry Moniale gave Seychelles a deserving lead in the 26th minute with a close range shot from inside the danger zone after utilizing a head pass from skipper Warren.

After the lemon break, Burundi came to the field with more organised way and got their immediate fruit in the 54th minute. Nshimirimana Jospin, the hero of the first match against Mauritius, restored the parity for Burundi with a header from inside the D box off a cross from Asman.

Skipper Tambwe Amissi kept Burundi in the 60th minute with a close shot from a goal mouth melee after capitalizing a cross from Blanchard from right wing.

Amissi sealed the victory scoring his second and third for the team in the 61st minute.

However, Seychelles came close of scoring creating some scoring chances in the remaining proceeding but failed to convert any of those into a goal lack of proper finishing.

Burundi dominated the proceeding, especially in the second half, and notched their deserving victory while Seychelles played good football in the first half but they failed to keep the tempo in the second half.

Sunday’s match: Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka at 5 pm.
