3-day National Vegetable Fair begins tomorrow

DHAKA, Jan 2, 2020 (BSS) – A three-day long ‘National Vegetable Fair’ begins tomorrow in the capital with the aim of motivating people to consume vegetables in plenty and improving nutritional status as well.

The main theme of this year’s fair is ‘Safe Vegetable for Good Health and Nutrition’ (Pusti o Susasther jonno, Nirapad Sabji).

The Ministry of Agriculture is organizing the fair which will conclude on January 5.

On the eve of the fair, President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages greeting all those involved in the agriculture sector.

In their messages, they said the theme of this year’s fair is very much time-befitting as vegetable is essential for one’s good health and nutrition.

President Hamid, in his message, said Bangladesh has earned massive success in agriculture sector as the present government has taken various initiatives for the development of agriculture in the country.

Currently, the country is ranked the third across the globe for the production of vegetables, he said.

Besides achieving self-sufficiency in granular food, the production of vegetables has also increased by a record quantity in Bangladesh, he added.

The President urged all concerned to be more active in the development, expansion and marketing system of agro-products so that the ongoing development trend in this regard will continue in days to come.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said her Awami League government has made massive development for the agriculture sector by implementing agriculture-friendly policies in the country.

Special importance has been given in some particular matters like reducing price of agricultural commodities including fertilizers and seeds, providing easy-term loans to farmers, opening a bank account at 10 Taka, cash assistance to farmers, mechanization of agriculture and expansion of e-agriculture, the premier added.

The marketing system has been further modernized, she said, adding that fair price of agro-products has also been ensured to the farmers by establishing a ‘farmer’s market’ in the country.

The President and the Prime Minister wished success of all programmes of the fair.
