DHAKA, Dec 30, 2019 (BSS) – Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today said that the work for installing spans on the much hyped Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project will end by June next year.

“The 20th span on the Padma Bridge will be installed tomorrow and from now on three spans will be installed on the Bridge every month,” he said.

Quader, also Awami League general secretary, said this after the Japanese Ambassador in Dhaka Naoki Ito made a courtesy call on him at his office at the Setu Bhaban in the city’s Banani area.

He said that work is going on in full swing to complete the bridge and hopefully it would be open for traffic before the stipulated timeframe for completion.

When asked about the reason behind the change of Awami League candidature for the upcoming Dhaka South City Corporation Polls, Quader denied making any comment.

“Awami League has given such candidate who is acceptable to all, popular and also can win the race,” he said adding, “I won’t go for making comment whether the outgoing mayor was good or bad. We’re looking forward and we’ve chosen acceptable and popular candidate for the ensuing election,” he added.

Quader also informed that various survey reports and the opinion from the AL city units have been considered before giving the final nomination from the AL.

Mentioning that the AL is not bothered about the win or defeat in the upcoming polls, he said, “We want that the election will be competitive, free, fair, credible and acceptable where people will exercise their voting rights as per their wish.”

Answering to a question, the AL general secretary said that everything possesses a challenge. “But, our stance is that our Prime Minister has already announced that the election will be free, fair and credible. We don’t think that sky will break down on us is there is any disaster on our part in the election.”
