No army deployment in city polls: CEC

BARISHAL, June 6, 2018 (BSS) – Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul
Huda today ruled out any possibility of army deployment in the upcoming city
polls, saying the Election Commission (EC) has no plan to deploy army in any
local government election.

“Army will not be deployed during the upcoming city polls. But the
deployment of army during the next general elections will be finalized after
holding discussion in the EC,” he said while talking to reporters after
inaugurating a workshop for the election officials of Barishal and Faridpur
zones over the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) at the Circuit House
here.

Speaking about EVM, he said, “We want to present free, fair and neutral
elections and EVM can play vital role in this regard”.

He also urged all to conduct campaign on advantage and necessity of EVM
system.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Barishal Md Habibur Rahman presided over the
inaugural function of the training programme.

According to EC source, the city corporation elections to Gazipur will be
held on June 26 and elections to Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal scheduled to
be held on July 30.
