Monnujan for training youths to face 4th industrial revolution

DHAKA, Dec 8, 2019 (BSS) – State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian today said that the government would have to train the educated youths for their skills development to make them prepared for the 4th industrial revolution.

“According to the ILO, around two million new educated young people are coming into the job market every year. But, to accommodate them in this 4th industrial revolution transition period, we have to train them for skill development,” she said.

The state minister was addressing a seminar organized by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) on “Future Skill Development Required for Bangladesh” at a hotel in the city.

PM’s Principal Secretary Md. Nojibur Rahman was present as a guest of honour. President of Bangladesh Employers’ Federation Kamran T. Rahman was present as special guest.

Monnujan said the existing academic curriculum cannot make skills for job and the country’s manufacturing sector is adopting technology day by day which may cut jobs. “But, it will create more innovative jobs as well.”

She said the government has established few Polytechnic Institutes across the country and allowed the private sector to come forward to establish more Polytechnic Institutes in the country.

Nojibur stressed the need for formulating a need-based curriculum coming out of the traditional system of education to create industry-demand employment.

“The world is going fast and adopting newer technological shift, so we should not waste our time,” he said.

The principal secretary said according to a2i, 5.5 million people of 5 sectors which is 47 percent of total workforce may lose their jobs due to automation by the year 2041.

“Skills development, re-skilling, up-skilling, technology adaptation, training and R&D are some of the main areas where we should focus now. Agriculture sector is a vast sector which will create more job opportunities but need to modernization and trainings,” he added.

DCCI President Osama Taseer said in Bangladesh the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) has changed the dynamics of employment generation.

He said the traditional job requirements will no longer be eligible and the criteria will be replaced with the knowledge of technology, 4th industrial revolution, robotics, internet of things, big data.

Kamran said that 80 percent of jobs are created by the industry sector. He also stressed on diversification of potential exportable items rather than RMG.

Mohammad Rezaul Karim, Member of National Skills Development Authority, presented the keynote paper while DCCI Vice President Imran Ahmed offered the vote of thanks.
