Jiarul wins sixth gold for Bangladesh in men’s SAG weightlifting

POKHARA, Dec 7, 2019 (BSS) – After Bangladesh’s Mabia Akter Simanta, Jiarul
Islam became the second athlete of the day as he won the sixth gold for
Bangladesh in 96-kg men’s weightlifting category of the ongoing South Asian
Games held on Saturday at Banquet Hall here.

He lifted 262 kgs — 120 kg in snatch and 142 kg in clean and jerk — on
his way to beating his Nepalese rival Vishal Singh who bagged silver in this
event while Kinley Gyeltshen of Bhutan secured bronze medal.

After winning the gold, Jiarul talking to the press in his immediate
reaction said, “I didn’t expect that I would be able to win gold for the
country as it was beyond my expectation.”

Jiarul, who hails from Dinajpur, said “My only aim was to participate in
the SA games, now I am very happy as I won gold medal for the country for the
first time in foreign soil.”

Earlier, on the day, Mabia won the fifth gold medal for Bangladesh in 76-kg
category of women’s weightlifting as she lifted 185 kgs — 80 kg in snatch
and 105 kg in clean and jerk — on her way to beating her Sri Lankan
counterpart.
