One crore saplings to be planted during Bangabandhu’s birth centenary: Shahab

NAOGAON, Nov 23, 2019 (BSS) – The government has taken an initiative for planting one crore saplings across the country to mark the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary.

This was stated by Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin while addressing as the chief guest a cheque distribution ceremony of the beneficiaries of social forestry, arranged by the Forest Department at Dhamoirhat upazila in Naogaon.

On the birth centenary of Bangabandhu, around one crore saplings will be planted throughout the country, he commented.

Shahab said to maintain ecological balance, the forest department should reclaim the forest land and build new forestry.

He continued: trees protect us from natural disasters.

During the cyclone Bulbul, the Sundarbans protected us from all kinds of damages, he added.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md. Harun-or-Rashid presided over the meeting while chairman of standing committee on the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Shahiduzzaman Sarker, Forest Conservator of Bogra region Dr. Md. Joglul Hossain and District Forest Officer of Rajshahi division Niyamur Rahman also spoke on the occasion.

On the occasion, a cheque for Tk 2 crore 94 lakh 44 thousand was distributed among the 152 beneficiaries of the Forest Department Dhamoirhat unit.

Each beneficiary received a maximum dividend of Tk 13 lakh and a minimum of Tk 55,000.
