Dhaka seeks Vietnam’s support on Rohingya crisis under ASEAN framework

DHAKA, Nov 4, 2019 (BSS) – Foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen today sought Vietnam’s support in resolving the Rohingya crisis within ASEAN framework as Hanoi is likely to be the chair of the 10 southeast Asian nations association, including Myanmar, from January 2020.

Momen made the call while outgoing Vietnam Ambassador to Bangladesh Tran Van Khoa called on him at the foreign ministry here, a press release said.

The Vietnamese envoy assured the foreign minister of conveying the Dhaka’s urge to his headquarters to play a positive role as the ASEAN chair for ensuring a safe, secured and dignified repatriation of the forcibly displaced Rohingyas to Myanamr.

The foreign minister said Bangladesh attaches utmost importance to its bilateral ties with Vietnam while the two friendly nations are close partners in multiple arenas.

Momen urged Vietnamese companies to invest in economic zones and hi-tech parks of Bangladesh as currently Dhaka offers most attractive investment package among the competing regional countries.

He also observed that the bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Vietnam can further be expanded, if non tariff barriers are removed.
