Vettori’s experience about India cricket will benefit us: Sunny
DHAKA, Oct 25, 2019 (BSS)-Bangladesh left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny, who was recalled to the national fold after three years, reckoned the side’s newly appointed spin consultant Daniel Vettori’s experience about Indian cricket and wicket would help them to do well in their upcoming tour.
“He was a left-arm spin great. He is my coach now. I believe his experience would benefit us in various ways,” Sunny said here on Friday after the first day’s practice session for the Tigers upcoming tour in India.
Vettori, the former New Zealand skipper, played 113 Tests, 295 ODIs and 34 T20Is for New Zealand and claimed 362, 305 and 38 wickets respectively.
In longer version, he played 15 matches in Indian soil and took 40 wickets with the best of 6-127. Though his average 48.42 in India was not good enough, he remains one of the most successful overseas spinners in Indian soil. He took 20 wickets in India in 22 ODIs and played just 1 T20 match in Indian soil in which he couldn’t claim any wicket.
The 40-year-old coach previously played and worked for several teams of Indian Premier League (IPL), and it made him more experienced about Indian condition and the Indian players. More importantly he was the coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru RCB) in which Virat Kohli is the captain. Vettori nursed the spinners in RCB like Washinton Sundor, Yuzvendra Chahala who are now the established player in Indian cricket.
The BCB handed him the role after they parted ways with Indian coach Sunil Joshi. Vettori who would spend 100 days with Bangladesh team till the 2020 World T20 just reached the country this (Friday) morning and joined the side at afternoon.
“We haven’t spoken much as it was just the first day of practice session. He just has seen us bowling. May be he will talk to us in the next day,” said Sunny.
“He has vast experience under his belt. He himself was a great player during his playing life. He also played and coached in many IPL teams. So he knows how to do well in India. I hope we will be benefited by his vast experience. And I also hope I will do better as a bowler if I can take something from him.”
Sunny said he is keen to know about Indian wicket and how to bowl in this wicket from Vettroi.
“He knows the Indian wicket better than us. Not all wicket is same in India. There has been some diversity in every wicket. So it’s important to know how to bowl here, something what Vettori knows well. I want to learn that art from him.”
Co-incidentally Sunny was dropped from the national team after playing his last International match in 2016 World T20 in India. Another India tour however will mark his return to the national team.
“I hope I will get a place in the first XI and will play a match. I have been working really hard in those three years and performed regularly. Last time unfortunately I was dropped from the team because of my bowling action. Hopefully this time I will correct everything if I get the chance to play.”
