BGB retaliation for self-defence leaves one BSF man dead

DHAKA, Oct 17, 2019 (BSS) – The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) today said a member of their Indian counterpart Border Security Force (BSF) was killed and another wounded as they were forced to use guns in self-defence against the backdrop of BSF gunfire over illegal fishing of Indian fishermen in Bangladesh territory.

“A BGB patrol team fired gunshots in self-defence . . . a (BGB-BSF) flag meeting later revealed that one BSF member was killed and another wounded,” a BGB statement said hours after the cross-border violence took place in Bangladesh’s north-western Charghat frontier in Rajshahi.

Captain of Rajshahi Battalion of BGB and Commandant of 117 BSF Battalion held the flag meeting.

The both sides agreed to take measures after investigating the incident from respective positions. Besides, they agreed to hold flag meeting again for further discussion in the incident.

According to the statement, three Indian fishermen were seen fishing on the Padma river intruding into Bangladesh territory in Rajshahi this morning.

During this time, a patrol team of Charghat BOP of BGB detained an Indian fisherman but two others fled to India by their boat. Then four members of BSF intruded into Bangladesh territory by a speedboat at the mouth of Baral river under Charghat upazila while a BGB patrol team obstructed them.

Later, the BSF members wanted to forcefully bring back the detained fishermen. The BGB patrol team told the BSF men to get back the fishermen through flag meeting as per rules.

The BSF members were also informed that they will also be handed over through flag meeting as they intruded into Bangladesh territory. Getting excited, the BSF members started firing and they kept firing to flee into the Indian territory by their speedboat along with the fishermen. Then the BGB members fired gunshots in self-dence.

Later, the flag meeting revealed that one BSF member was killed and another wounded in the incident.
