Speaker for strong role of MPs to ensure peoples’ welfare
DHAKA, Sept 18, 2019 (BSS) – Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin
Chaudhury today urged the members of the parliament (MPs) to play a strong
role to ensure welfare of the people.
“Development will become fruitful if people’s welfare is ensured…the
parliament members can play a vital role to ensure greater welfare of the
people,” said the Speaker.
Dr Shirin made the remarks while addressing as the chief guest at a
programme titled ‘Consultation meeting on the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25,
Accelerating the Promise’, jointly organized by the Parliament Secretariat
and UNFPA, said an official release here today.
The Speaker said Bangladesh is progressing rapidly, under the dynamic
leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The government is committed
towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) by 2030.
She said that parliament members under the banner of ‘Bangladesh
Association of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (BAPPD)’ are
playing a leading role in preventing child marriage, reducing maternal
mortality and youth development.
Dr Shirin noted that the example of Bangladesh’s success in the health
sector is appreciated universally.
Terming the women as ‘ambassadors of development’, Dr Shirin called upon
the members of the parliament to give special importance towards women
development, added the release.
It was stated in the programme that the 25th anniversary of the ICPD will
be held in Nairobi next November.
The programme was presided over by the JS Senior Secretary Dr Jafar Ahmed
Khan. While, UNFPA’S Bangladesh Representative Dr Asha Torkelson presented
the welcome speech.
JS Whip Iqbalur Rahim and UNFPA’s Regional Director of Asia Pacific Borjen
Anderson were also present as chief guests.
