Lawmakers recall Ershad in the JS

SANGSAD BHABAN, Sept 8, 2019 (BSS) – Both the treasury and opposition lawmakers today said the people will recall Jatiya Party Chairman and former leader of opposition Hussain Muhammad Ershad.

“The people will recall him for his welfare works…he[Ershad] did huge development in the rural areas across the country,” Tofail Ahmed said this while participating in a discussion on the condolence motion at the start of the fourth session of the 11th Jatiya Sangsad here.

Tofail Ahmed said although we had a difference in political ideology but he made a lot of development works in the rural areas.

Showing deep respect to his memory, Ershad’s wife Raushan Ershad said the former president HM Ershad made lot of development works in line with the dream of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to reach the benefit of independence at peoples doorsteps.

To this aim, Raushan said Ershad constituted upazila system as part of decentralization of the administration but it was later defunct by the government led by the BNP government. Recalling his contribution to country’s development, Ershad’s brother and Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader said “Ershad was the only leader who had a great contribution to Readymade Garments sector of the country by developing forward and backward linkages.”

Regarding the economic freedom of the people which was dreamt by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, opposition lawmaker Anisul Islam Mahmud said Ershad was the first president who visited the mausoleum of Bangabandhu at Tungipara for paying respect, adding that even he had tried to materialize Bangabandhu’s dream of economic emancipation.

Awami League lawmakers Amir Hossain Amu, Mohammad Nasim, Shahjahan Khan, Jatiya Party lawmakers Mashiur Rahman Ranga, Kazi Feroz Rashid, Fakhrul Imam, Mujibul Haq Chunnu, Shamim Haider Patwari, Ahsan Adilur Rahman, Pir Fazlur Rahman, Salma Islam, Nazma Akhter and BNP lawmaker Harunur Rashid, among others spoke on the event.

On July 19, 2019, H M Ershad passed away at the age of 89.
