Culture of abidance by laws to be followed: DMP chief

DHAKA, Aug 31, 2019 (BSS) – Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia today made a plea to introduce the culture of abiding by laws and further developing infrastructures to bring back discipline in the roads and highways.

“Infrastructure development will bring about a visible and people-centric change in the roads and highways. Road accidents on the Dhaka-Aricha highway have been decreased by 95 percent in the wake of some road engineering on the route,” he said, addressing a discussion at the auditorium of the Rajarbagh Police Lines here.

The DMP Traffic Division organized the discussion titled “Fixing doable steps to develop bus management in Dhaka city’.

Asaduzzaman said that after construction of some bypasses road accidents in the capital city caused earlier due to long distance vehicles also declined remarkably.

Noting that the absence of bus bays in the city leads to passengers’ sporadic getting on and off the buses, the DMP commissioner said the DMP Traffic Division has identified 167 bus stoppages in the city and installed metal pillars to bar motorcycles from using the footpaths.

It is impossible for Police to execute the laws as most of the people are prone to violating the laws, he said, adding, “We should initiate the culture of obeying by the laws”.

Informing that the traffic prosecution and realizing fines have been digitalized, Asaduzzaman said the drivers are being fined for committing offences by the prosecutions.

He urged the transport owners and workers to treat the transportation of passengers not only as a business, but also a service to people.

DMP Traffic Division Additional Commissioner Mafiz Uddin Ahmed and Bangladesh Road Transport Owners’ Association Secretary General Khandaker Enayet Ullah addressed the discussion, among others.

DMP senior officials and leaders of bus owners and workers were present in the programme.
