DHAKA, July 24, 2017 (BSS) – The government today withdrew deputy commissioners (DCs) of Barguna and Barishal districts replacing them with two new administrative chiefs of the two southwestern districts.

“They have been withdrawn from their current postings in Barisal and Barguna . . . two new deputy commissioners have been appointed in the two districts,” Senior Secretary of Public Administration Ministry Dr M Mozammel Haque Khan told BSS.

A government circular made available to BSS later said deputy commissioner of Barishal and Barguna Gazi M Saifuzzaman and Bashirul Alam were attached to Public Administration as officers on special duty (OSD).

It said Habibur Rahman and Md Mokhlesur Rahman replaced the two in Barisal and Barguna while until their new appointments they were serving as the private secretary to the state minister for social welfare and chief executive officer of Pabna Zilla Parishad.

The development came amid a media uproar over the recent harassment of Barguna sadar upazila nirbahi officer who was detained for two hours while newspapers carried pictures showing policemen escorting him to the “court hajat” tightly grabbing his hands after a court order.

Officials familiar with the development said the decision came as the two deputy commissioners failed to protect his dignity over the fictitious charge of publishing Bangabandhu’s “distorted image”.

The image, printed on an invitation card, was drawn by a minor child and selected from an art competition.

Meanwhile, the government today also appointed two more new DCs to Habiganj and Lalmonirhat.

Md Shafiur Arif, deputy secretary of LGRD has been made DC of Lalmonirhat district, while Manish Chakma in Hobiganj.
