Lightning kills 11 in 4 districts

DHAKA, May 9, 2018 (BSS) – At least 11 people were killed in lightning strikes in Habiganj, Nilphamari, Rajshahi and Jamalpur districts of the country today.

Of them, six people were killed in Habiganj, two each in Nilphamari and Rajshahi and another one in Jamalpur district.

In Habiganj, six farmers were killed and nine others injured by lightning strikes while they were cutting paddy at different haors in Baniachong, Nabiganj, Lakhai and Madhabpur upazilas of the district, BSS district correspondent said.

The deceased were identified as Swapan Das, 35, son of Basanta Das of Birai upazila in Sunamganj, Joynal Miah, 60, son of Nouser Miah of Chouhali upazila in Sirajganj, Narayan Pal, 35, son of Harilal Pal of Nabiganj upazila in Habiganj, Abu Talib, 20, son of Habibur Rahman of Nabiganj, Sufi Mia, 55, son of Abdus Sahid, a resident of Lakhai upazila in Habiganj, Jahor Lal Sarkar, 23, son of Rajkumar Sarkar of Madhabpur upazila in Habiganj district.

In Nilphamari, two people were killed when lightning struck them at Dimla upazila of the district this morning.

Police said the lightning followed by a rainstorm hit housewife Asma Begum, 50, a resident of Balagram-Shalongram of the upazila, when she was in the yard of her house. She died on the spot.

Farmer Nur Amin, 45, resident of Kathali-Uttar Desibai village, died on the spot by lightning when he was working at a paddy field, said Sohrab Hossain, chairman of Kathali union parishad.

In Rajshahi, two people including a college student were killed on the spot and two others sustained injuries when they were hit by thunderbolts in Tanore Upazila of the district this noon, locals said.

The deceased were identified as Ansar Ali, 40, son of Lokeman Ali of Batashpur village and Sohag Ali, 18, son of Shamsuddin of Dubail Namopara village. Two injured persons identified as Ananda Shaha, 35, and Liton Shaha, 30, were admitted to Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

Rejaul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Tanore Police Station, said Ansar Ali accompanied by some other farmers fall prey to the thunderbolt strike when they were harvesting paddy.

On the other hand, college student Shohag came under the hit while he was irrigating their farming field.

In Jamalpur, A man was killed by lightning in Dewanganj upazila in the district this morning.

The victim was identified as Habibur Rahman, 47, son of late Abdul Majid at village Moulavir Char in Char Amkhawa Union in Dewanganj upazila.
