KHULNA, July 29, 2019 (BSS) – With two weeks left for Eid-ul-Azha, the sacrificial animals are being brought to cattle markets in all nine upazilas under Khulna.

The cattle traders and market leaseholders are now passing busy time.

Meanwhile, people especially service holders are preparing themselves to buy cattle after getting monthly salary as well as Eid bonus. Livestock Office sources said here the demand for sacrificial animals in ten districts under the Khulna division is around 6 lakh this year. Till now 7 lakh 31 thousand and 844 cattle-heads are in stock in local farms and houses.

The demand for sacrificial animals in Khulna this Eid-ul-Azha could be met almost entirely with locally-reared livestock.

Even 50 percent of the division’s demand could not be fulfilled with local livestock before, but over the last five years, the situation has changed and now hundred percent of the demand can be met with local stock, said Dr. Arun Kanti Mondal, Additional District Livestock Officer in Khulna.

“This became possible after farmers started rearing cattle in large scale in the region as they found it profitable,” he said, adding that at least 1.25 lakh cattle will be sent outside after meeting demand for Khulna division.

Md Abdul Hannan, District Livestock Officer in Khulna, said,” Some days remain for the Eid-ul-Azha. Within this time, the cattle will be ready for sacrifice.”

On the other hand, the government has decided to close the border to prevent legal and illegal import of cattle this year.

The decision was taken in an inter-ministerial meeting recently with state minister for Fisheries and Livestock Ministry Ashraf Ali in the chair.
