DHAKA, May 8, 2018 (BSS)-Bangladesh has been ranked 18th out of 25 nations in the Asia-Pacific region on an index that measures country’s overall power situation including economic resources, military capability and resilience.

The Lowy Institute Asia Power Index measures power across 25 countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific region. The Lowy Institute is an Australian think tank with a global outlook.

A country’s overall power is its weighted average across eight measures of power-economic resources, military capability, resilience, future trends, diplomatic influence, economic relationships, defence networks and cultural influence. Bangladesh’s strongest performance is in the future trends measure, ranking in 9th place with a score of 5.2. Bangladesh’s lowest ranking occurs in the economic relationships measure in 23rd place.

The Index finds that the United States remains the pre-eminent power in Asia. China lags by 10 points but, as the emerging superpower, is rapidly closing in on the United States.

The gap between China, ranked 2nd, and Japan, ranked 3rd, is a startling 33 points – that’s the same difference as between Japan and Bangladesh, ranked in 18th place.
