India keens to extend support to revive waterway connectivity: Riva

RAJSHAHI, July 22, 2019 (BSS)- Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das here today said her country is interested in extending support to launch waterway connectivity between Bangladesh and India.

She also laid importance on dredging of the Padma River to bring back its navigability.

Indian envoy said this in a meeting with Rajshahi Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton at latter’s office.

Riva Ganguly, who arrived in Rajshahi on a daylong program, also discussed the issues of education exchange program and bilateral cooperation for development of silk sector.

Mayor Liton told the envoy that RCC has been implementing a Tk 21.95-crore project with Indian support for development of Rajshahi city.

The projects include- reconstruction of infrastructure of Rajshahi Cultural Sangho; construction of a Library building – Padma Library; conservation of water bodies; construction of footpath along different roads in the city; and renovation of a few temples in the city.

“I’m confident that the Rajshahi City Corporation will complete the work as early as possible so that local populace can enjoy the benefit of the projects,” the Indian HC said.

Riva was accompanied by Indian Assistant High Commissioner in Rajshahi Sanjeev Kumar Bhati and second secretary (visa and consular) Vishal Jyoti Das.

Earlier, the India envoy visited Bangladesh police academy and Varendra Musuem as well as held meeting with businessmen.

She visited the police academy in Sardha where she was given a guard of Honour after received by Additional Inspector General of Police and Principal of the Bangladesh Police Academy Md Nazibur Rahman.

Riva also took a tour at the academy’s Bangladesh-India Friendship Building funded by the government of India which houses cyber-crime and IT-training facilities.

Riva also addressed trainees of the academy.

Later, the Indian High Commissioner visited Varendra Research Museum of Rajshahi University (RU) where she was received by the university’s Vice-chancellor Professor Abdus Sobhan.

During the visit at Museum, the envoy expressed her willingness to further increase cooperation regarding arts and culture between the two friendly neighboring countries.

The High Commissioner held a meeting with the leaders of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI).

She expressed satisfaction over existing bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh and hoped to work together on projects aimed at enhancing linkages between Rajshahi and India.

Noting that the bilateral trade has been increasing between Indian an Bangladesh, the Indian envoy urged the businessmen to contribute more in the trade and commerce relations between the two nations.
