JS budget session prorogued

SANGSAD BHABAN, July 11, 2019 (BSS) – The budget session (3rd session) of the 11th Parliament was prorogued today.

This session in its 21 working days saw passing of national budget for fiscal 2019-20, supplementary budget for fiscal 2018-19 and seven bills.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury read out the prorogation order of the President of the budget session at 8.22 pm.

Prior to reading out the prorogation order, the Speaker thanked all lawmakers belonging to both treasury and opposition benches for reaching consensus in the House in upholding parliamentary democratic practices.

As the parliament remains active, democracy is sustained here and the country’s development is accelerated, she said.

Dr Shirin congratulated the lawmakers for taking part in the budget discussions alongside raising questions and call attention notices.

The session began on June 11 and Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on June 13 placed the national budget of Taka 5,23,190 crore for the fiscal 2019-20 in the House. As the finance minister fell sick at one stage of placing the budget, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina read out the rest of the budget speech on behalf of Kamal.

A total of 269 lawmakers took part in the budget discussions for 55 hours and 36 minutes on the budget for 2019-20.

The session got 235 notices under the Section 71 of the Rules of Procedure. Of those, 12 notices were accepted while five out of 12 were discussed in the House.

Besides, 75 notices were discussed for two minutes under the Section 71 (A) of the Rules of Procedure.

A total of 93 questions were received for the Prime Minister, of which she responded to 41 questions along with supplementary ones.

The session received a total of 2,274 questions for different ministers, state ministers and deputy ministers, and they replied to 1,658 questions, including supplementary ones.

Leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Deputy Leader of the Opposition Raushon Ershad, ministers, state ministers, and treasury and opposition benches members took part in the businesses of the House.

Earlier, Leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Deputy Leader of the Opposition Raushon Ershad gave their valedictory speeches.

The Speaker thanked all parliament members, officials, journalists, law enforcers and fire service and civil defense personnel for their restless service towards holding the parliament session smoothly.
