UNESCO given assurances of protecting Sundarbans: Tawfiq

DHAKA, July 10, 2019 (BSS) – Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi today said all necessary assurances of protecting the world’s largest mangrove forest Sundarbans have been given to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

“The much talked about power plant project of the country is out of the buffer zone of the Sundarbans. Those, who cannot tolerate the country’s development, are making odd remarks over the Sundarbans,” he said.

Tawfiq-e-Elahi came up with the remarks at a press conference at the conference room of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) here after a follow-up discussion on Azerbaijan visit on the occasion of participation of a Bangladesh delegation at the 43rd meeting of UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

Power Division Senior Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus, Water Resources Secretary Kabir Bin Anwar and other members of the delegation were present at the press conference.

A delegation led by Ahmad Kaikaus joined the 43rd meeting of UNESCO World Heritage Committee where 16 countries out of 21 supported Bangladesh, Dr Elahi said.

Development projects need to be implemented in a coordinated way as the country is densely populated, he said, adding that there is no scope to stop implementing the power plant project.
