JS adopts condolence motion on death of Rushema

SANGSAD BHABAN, July 10, 2019 (BSS) – Parliament today unanimously adopted a condolence motion expressing profound grief at the demise of veteran ruling party lawmaker Rushema Begum (women seat-34).

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury moved the condolence motion in the House at the beginning of the 3rd session of the 11th Jatiya Sangsad.

Rushema Begum breathed her last around 11:35pm at Faridpur Heart Foundation Hospital on Tuesday at the age of 85.

After the national parliament elections on December 30, 2018, she was nominated by the ruling Awami League as a women reserve seat from Faridpur and took oath on February 20.

Rushema Begum, wife of Bangabandhu’s close associate Imam Uddin Ahmed who also was Awami League President of Faridpur and former parliamentarian from 1970 to 1973.

Rushema, was born on January 2, 1936 at Faridpur district and joined as the head mistress at then Faridpur Girls Junior Madrasha on August 2 in 1959, after obtaining BA and B.ED degree.

In 1996, she [Rushema] was acknowledged by the government for her outstanding contribution in socio-economic arena of the country and she was conferred with an honorary crest ‘advance women’ by a local NGO’Rasin’ in 2005.

Taking part in the condolence motion, Parliament Leader and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Rushema Begum was a dedicated women leader and she played a pivotal role in women development.

The Premier sought eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed her deep sympathy to her bereaved family members.

Expressing deep shock at the death of Rushema Begum, Deputy Leader of the Opposition Raushon Ershad said Rushema Begum was an outstanding personality, who worked for the welfare of the people and country’s socio-economic development.

Treasury bench lawmakers Begum Matia Chowdhury, Shajahan Khan, Tofail Ahmed, Mohammed Nasim and Amir Hossain Amu, and opposition chief whip Moshiur Rahman Ranga, among others, took part in the condolence motion.

A munajat seeking eternal peace of the departed soul was offered in the House. Treasury bench lawmaker Hafez Ruhul Amin Madani of Mymensingh-7 conducted the munajat.

Earlier, the members of the House also stood up and observed a one-minute solemn silence to pay respect to the memories of the deceased.
