Kenya court blocks East Africa’s first coal plant
NAIROBI, June 26, 2019 (BSS/AFP) – Kenya’s environment court blocked Wednesday
the construction of a coal power station in the Lamu archipelago, a $2
billion project facing fierce resistance from conservationists and local
communities.
Judge Mohammed Balala “set aside” an earlier decision granting a license to
developers Amu Power.
He order them to re-conduct a study on the impact the coal plant would have
on Lamu, a popular Indian Ocean tourist spot that includes a UNESCO World
Heritage site, and on its environment.
