DHAKA, June 20, 2019 (BSS) – The High Court today ordered Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) and Swajan Paribahan to pay total Taka 50 lakh to the family of college student Rajib Hossain, who lost his hand and ultimately succumbed to his injuries falling victim to a mad race between two buses.
A High Court division bench comprising Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order, asking the two transport companies to pay Taka 25 lakh each in compensation by next two months.
“The court also issued a couple of directives to ensure safety of the people on the street,” Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal, who filed a writ in this regard, told newsmen.
“The court asked the concerned to make newly-enacted Road Transport Act effective by six months, conduct vision and dope tests of the drivers while issuing driving license, not to allow bus operators to take passengers from unmarked areas, to ensure doors of the public buses are closed while on the move and not to allow any vehicles except ambulances and fire service transports to blow horn in front of schools, hospitals, residential and restricted areas,” he said.
Rajib Hossain, a third year bachelor degree student of Government Titumir College, died on April 17, ending a two-week struggle for life after losing his right hand being trapped between two speedy buses at Sonargaon Crossing in the city on April 3.
Rajib used to live in a mess at Jatrabari with his two younger brothers, Mehedi Hasan, a class seven student, and Abdullah, a class six student of Tamirul Millat Madrasha.
Rajib lost his mother when he was in class three and father in class eight and he had been guardian of his two younger brothers since then.
