Social safety net for country’s poverty reduction: Speaker

DHAKA, June 19, 2019 (BSS) -Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin
Chaudhury said the present government is working relentlessly to implement
the social safety net programmes to free the country from poverty.

“The incumbent government is working with utmost sincerity to implement
the social safety net programmes under the pragmatic leadership of Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina for poverty reduction in the country,” she said.

She was speaking at a workshop on national social safety net for the newly
elected lawmakers at the oath-taking room of the JS Bhaban, a press release
said.

The workshop was organized, especially for the newly-elect lawmakers, by
the JS and the Cabinet Division, it added.

The political philosophy of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh
Mujibur Rahman was to put smiles on the face of distressed people, she said,
adding that the government is working to this end.

JS Deputy Speaker Md Fazle Rabbi Mia and Chief Whip Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury
were present as special guests, while the Cabinet Division Secretary
delivered the welcome speech on the occasion.

During the last ten years, the country’s poverty rate has dropped from 40
percent (pc) to 21 pc under the leadership of our premier Sheikh Hasina, she
said, adding that social safety net activities could play an important role
in reducing poverty.

A sum of Tk 74,367 crore was proposed in the national budget for 2019-20
fiscal (FY 20) for poverty reduction, she added.

Cabinet Division Secretary (Coordination and Reformation) Md Shamsul
Arefin, Chief Coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Affairs in
the Prime Minister’s Office Md Abul Kalam Azad, Whips Atiqur Rahman Atiq,
Iqbalur Rahim, Mahbub Ara Begum Gini,Shamsul Haque Chowdhury and Senior
Secretary of Parliament Secretariat Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan were present on the
occasion.

A total of 103 newly elected lawmakers of the 11th National Parliament
attended the workshop.
