Met office forecasts heavy rainfall

DHAKA, July 19, 2017 (BSS) – Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at places in Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions in next 24 hours till 8am tomorrow due to active monsoon.

“Due to very heavy rainfall, landslide may occur at places in the hilly regions of Chittagong and Sylhet divisions,” said Bangladesh Metrological Department (BMD) in its special weather bulletin today.

The depression over west central Bay and adjoining northwest Bay off Odisha coast moved north-westwards, crossed Odisha coast near Puri at around 3am today and now lies over costal Odisha and adjoining area as a land depression, the bulletin added.

It is likely to move in a north-westerly direction further and weaken gradually. Under its influence steep pressure gradient persists over North Bay and squally weather may affect the maritime ports and costal areas of Bangladesh. Monsoon is active over Bangladesh and strong over North Bay.

BMD in it’s warning message said that “Rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary south or south-easterly gusty or squally wind speed 45-60 kph is likely to occur in the regions of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogra, Tangail, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Faridpur, Kushtia, Jessore, Khulna, Barisal, Patukahli, Noakhali, Comilla, Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet wherein river ports shall hoist cautionary signal number one till 6pm today”.

Besides, Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at most places in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places in the country in 24 hours as of 9am tomorrow.

Mild heat wave is sweeping over Rangpur division and the regions of Rajshahi and Pabna and it may abate.

Day temperature may fall by (2-4) o Celsius and night temperature may fall by (1-2) o Celsius over the country.

Country’s highest temperature on Tuesday was recorded 37.3 degree Celsius at Dinajpur in Rangpur division and minimum temperature 23.5 degree Celsius at Rangamati in Chittagong division. The highest rainfall was recorded 88 millimeter at Sandwip in Chittagong division. .

The sun sets at 6.48pm today and rises at 5.22am tomorrow in the capital.
