DHAKA, April 17, 2018 (BSS) – Rajib Hossain, a third year bachelor degree student of Government Titumir College, died early today, ending a two-week struggle for life after losing his right hand being trapped between two speedy buses at Sonargaon Crossing in the city on April 3.

Rajib, who had been on life support since April 10, at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), breathed his last around 12.40am today, police and hospital sources said.

Asked about the cause of Rajib’s death, Dr Pradip Biswas, lecturer of Department of Forensic at Dhaka Medical College, who conducted autopsy of his (Rajib) body told newsmen that Rajib died due to excessive bleedings

“No major injury was found on his hand. But there are blood clots in his brain and a portion of his skull was broken due to the accident,” he added.

After holding Rajib’s first Namaj-e-janaja on the High Court premises this afternoon, his relatives left Dhaka with the body around 2.30pm for his maternal grandfather’s village Daspara under Baufal Upazila of Patuakhali district, where he will be laid to the eternal rest.

Earlier on April 3, Rajib lost his right hand from the elbow after being caught between two buses at Sonargaon Crossing in the capital city due to the reckless driving by the drivers of BTRC and Swajan Paribahan.

Rajib was first admitted to Panthapath’s Samorita Hospital and then shifted to DMCH. Health Minister Mohammad Nasim visited injured Rajib at the DMCH on Thursday.

Jahanara Begum, maternal aunt of the deceased, told BSS that Rajib was living in a mess at Jatrabari with his two younger brothers, Mehedi Hasan, a class seven student and Abdullah, a class six student of Tamirul Millat Madrasha.

Rajib lost his mother when he was in class three and father in class eight, she said, adding that he had been guardian of his two younger brothers since then.

From a sit-in in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the city this morning, a rights group demanded capital punishment for the drivers of the two buses as they termed the death of Rajib as a “murder”.

The High Court earlier passed an ordered asking the BRTC and Swajan Paribahan to pay the bill for Rajib’s treatment. It also asked why they should not pay him Taka 10 million as compensation.
