Saplings of palm, golpata to be planted

KHULNA, June 11, 2019 (BSS) – Experts at a workshop today laid emphasis on plantation of saplings of palm and golpata trees to maintain ecological balance alongside protecting the people from adverse impact of natural events.

Both palm and golpata trees would be acted as buffer for safeguarding lives and property of the people from natural disasters like cyclone, lightning and riverbank erosion, they told the workshop here.

Mangrove Silviculture Division and Bangladesh Forest Research Institute jointly organised the workshop titled “Plantation of palm and golpata saplings”.

Research officer of Mangrove Silviculture Division office in Khulna Md Akramul Islam, upazila agriculture officer agriculturist Rabiul Islam and officials of different organisation concerned, among others, addressed the function.

At the workshop, the speakers said frequency and intensity of natural events including cyclone and lightning have increased sharply due to adverse impact of climate change.

Bangladesh needs to plant different verities of trees for increasing forest coverage, which will significantly contribute to maintain ecological balance in the country.

Rabiul said, “Many people are killed by lightning strike in rural areas every year. Palm tree will protect the people from lightning.”

Other speakers said the southeastern coastlines came under a spectacular greenbelt cover with regeneration of nearly extinct mangrove vegetation in the region under a participatory campaign to develop the green patch stretching along the entire shorelines of the Bay of Bengal.

They said the coastlines require the greenbelt for protection from cyclones or tidal surges but the mangrove was crucial particularly for conservation of critical ecosystem, also to prevent the climate change phenomenon, in regions where the sea touches the mainland.
