DHAKA, April 10, 2018 (BSS) – Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today said the attackers of Dhaka University vice-chancellor’s residence in the wee hours of Monday must be brought to justice as an investigation is underway to this end.

“Those who will be found guilty of the barbaric acts carried out at the Dhaka University vice-chancellor’s residence will be brought to justice to avert repetition of such incidents,” he told newsmen after visiting the DU vice-chancellor’s residence.

The minister said none would be allowed to create instability in the country in the name of waging movement for the government job quota system reforms.

The DU VC’s residence came under arson attack and vandalism when agitators took to street with the demand of quota reforms in the wee hours of Monday. Several private cars and furniture were set ablaze as the attackers stormed into the residence breaking into the entry gate.

Describing the attack as an orchestrated one, Quader said even the vice-chancellor’s bedroom was attacked and ornaments of family members were looted.

Quader said the prestigious Dhaka University, which is dubbed as oxford of the East, came under dreadful attacks in 1971 but the VC residence escaped it. Even in the last 47 years since independence, such incidents did not take place, he added.

The minister said they would look into whether anyone is out to catch fish in muddled water.

“What is the relation of the vice-chancellor with quota system? Did Dhaka University VC introduce this quota? Did he support the existing quota?” he said, adding the perpetrators have to reply how the vice-chancellor’s residence is connected with the movement.

Social Welfare Minister Rashed Khan Menon, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia, AL Organizing Secretary AKM Enamul Haque Shamim and Central Working Committee Member SM Kamal Hossain were present on the occasion.
