DHAKA, May 29, 2019 (BSS) – About 97 percent people in the country are at
risk of non-communicable diseases, while about 70 percent people die of the
chronic diseases across the world every year, says a government survey.

The findings of the study titled ‘Bangladesh Non-Communicable Diseases Risk
Assessment Survey-2018’ were revealed at a press conference at the conference
room of the Health and Family Welfare Ministry here today.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Malek and Health Service Division
secretary Md Asadul Islam were present, among others, at the press
conference.

The National Institute of Preventive and Social Medicine (NIPSOM) under the
Health and Family Welfare Ministry with support from the Non-Communicable
Disease Control (NCDC) Division and the World Health Organization (WHO)
conducted the survey in the country.

Highlighting the findings of the survey, principal researcher Prof Dr
Baizid Khoorshid Riaz said the adult people in the country are at high risk
of non-communicable diseases due to obesity, taking extra salt, tobacco and
alcohol and not taking balanced food and inadequate physical labour.

He said about 71 percent people of the country are at risk of one or two
reasons, while most of them are at risk of three or four reasons.

The survey identified that regular smoking, taking inadequate vegetables
and fruits, inadequate physical labour, high cholesterol in blood, high blood
pressure and obesity are the major reasons behind the non-communicable
diseases.
