Govt takes steps to protect consumer rights: Tofail

DHAKA, Mar 15, 2018 (BSS)-Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed today urged consumers to come forward along with the government to protect their rights, saying that the government is taking all legal measures to guard the rights of consumers.

“The government has been taking steps to protect consumer rights. Along with the government consumers must come forward to protect their rights,” said the commerce minister while speaking at a seminar here.

Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) and Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) jointly organized the seminar marking the World Consumer Rights Day. Bangladesh observed the World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) today as elsewhere in the world.

Tofail Ahmed said Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection has been established as per the consumer rights protection law, which has been working to protect the rights of consumers. Legal measures have been taken against the people who are violating the rights of consumers by conducting operations in markets, he added.

Stressing the need for creating public awareness about rights of consumers, he said the government has been taking steps to protect the rights of consumers through maintaining good relation with the businesspeople.

Mentioning the government’s anti-formalin drives, he said, the government has been able to check the use of formalin in food items.

The commerce minister said businesspeople are also becoming conscious about the rights of consumers. The consumer rights movement has been spread all over the country as coordination committees have been formed with representatives from different professions at division, district and upazila levels to establish the rights of consumers, he added.

Chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the commerce ministry Md Tajul Islam Chowdhury, commerce secretary Shubhashish Basu, CAB president Golam Rahman, first vice president of FBCCI Sheikh Fazle Fahim, among others, spoke at the seminar.

Dean of Uttara University’s School of Business Faculty Prof Nazrul Islam presented the keynote paper at the seminar.

As part of the day’s programme, a colourful rally was brought out from National Museum to Suhrawardy Memorial Auditorium in the morning. Easy competition was organized for students at school, college and university levels.
