Norway to provide technical assistance to formulate shipbuilding policy

DHAKA, April 2, 2019 (BSS) – Norway will provide technical assistance
in formulating policy to ensure safe and environment-friendly shipbuilding
industry in Bangladesh.

Norwegian Ambassador to Bangladesh Sidsel Bleken expressed keen interest
at a meeting with Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun at latter’s
office here today.

The ambassador also apprised the minister of the interest of Norwegian
entrepreneurs in renewable and solar energy sector of Bangladesh.

During the meeting, they discussed various aspects of bilateral
cooperation in the sector including creating skilled manpower, efficient
utilization of water resources and investment-friendly laws.

Terming Norway as an important development partner for Bangladesh,
Industries Minister said the government has taken an initiative to establish
an industrial university aiming to create skilled manpower in the industrial
sector.

He hoped that the respective university would create world-class
manpower in developed countries including Norway in the days to come.

Norway can provide research, technology and technical support in this
regard, he added.

The Minister thanked the Norwegian Ambassador for showing interest in
building a policy for shipbuilding and development of private sector in
Bangladesh.

Industries Minister said Bangladesh is working to achieve the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the leadership of Prime Minister
Sheikh Hasina.

Special initiatives have been taken to achieve the 6, 9 and 12 number
SDG-targets of the industries, he said, adding that the present government is
formulating the policy to this end.

He also drew attention of the ambassador to take a joint collaboration
to identify bilateral assistance areas in the industrial sector.

Ambassador Bleken said that his country is eager to provide necessary
supports to the private sector to develop a ‘Private Sector Development
Policy’ for sustainable development.

Praising Bangladesh’s investment-friendly policy framework, he said
“This has created a sound and competitive environment for foreign investors
in Bangladesh.”

Additional Secretary Begum Parag and senior officials of the ministry
were also present at the meeting.
