Stern action against rumor mongers on social media: IGP

DHAKA, April 01, 2019 (BSS)- Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Javed Patwary today warned that stern action will be taken against those who will try to deter law and order through rumors using social media centering the Pahela Baishakh.

“Police will take action against those who will try to deter law and order, by using social media like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other outlets of communications,” he gave the directives while addressing a meeting on law and order and security on the occasion of the Pahela Baishakh at police headquarters.

The IGP also asked police force to increase intelligence surveillance against the militants and terrorist organizations across the country.

Dr Javed said that special measures have been taken to ensure additional security on the occasion of the ‘Pahela Baishakh’ celebration on 14 April in the country.

He said the police force will perform their duties professionally so that people can celebrate the ‘Pahela Baishakh’ in a festive manner.

The meeting decided to review the safety risks based on police and intelligence report of the venues, including Ramna Batamul, Rabindra Sarobar, Hatirjheel, Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) and other public gatherings in the capital city on 14 April.

He said police have taken a widespread security measures to ensure safe and smooth celebration of the Pahela Baishakh, the Bengali New Year.

Cities and villages have been witnessing various fairs since long. “We will be able to celebrate the Baishakhi festival of the Bangalee nation with united efforts of all,” he added.

Necessary security measures will be taken on the occasion at large shopping centers, markets, shops and business establishments in different parts of the country including the capital, he said.

Additional IGP and Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Benazir Ahmed, Additional IGPs Dr M Mainur Rahman Chowdhury, Mohammad Abul Kashem, M Shafiqul Islam, Mir Shahidul Islam, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police M Shahab Uddin Koreshi and chiefs of different police units as well as intelligence agencies were present at the meeting.

Besides, separate control rooms will be set up at the Police Headquarters, All Metropolitan, Range and District Superintendent of Police, for overall coordination of the security arrangements on the occasion of the Pahela Baishakh.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and the RAB Control Room will be set up at Ramna Park.

Besides, DMP will provide services to people through ‘Lost and Found Centre’.
