World Water Day tomorrow

DHAKA, March 21, 2019 (BSS) – World Water Day will be observed in the country amid different programmes tomorrow as elsewhere in the world.

This year’s World Water Day theme, “Leaving no one behind”, adapts the central promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that states as sustainable development progress, everyone must benefit.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the eve of the day.

The president, in his message, said there is no alternative to ensure availability of sufficient water for irrigation in agricultural production.

“Food security is largely dependent on water management. There is no alternative to ensure availability of sufficient water for agricultural production,” he said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said water is the fundamental element of life and environment.

She said agriculture, industry, fisheries and rearing of livestock, forestation and biodiversity are dependent on water.

But excessive uses of groundwater, increasing of salinity at costal belt, increasing of population, urbanization and industrialization, environment pollution, artificial hindrance to the free flow of water and climate change are pushing the source of drinking water to gradual uncertainty, she added.

Water Rescuers Ministry in a press release issued here today saying that the ministry has decided to observe the across the country on April 11 next.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to attend the programme at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) on that day.

World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution by which 22 March of each year was declared World Day for Water, to be observed starting in 1993, in conformity with the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) contained in Chapter 18 (Fresh Water Resources) of Agenda 21.
