Govt plans to construct Bangabandhu int’l airport nearby Dhaka

DHAKA, March 20, 2019 (BSS) – The government has planned to construct Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman International Airport nearby the capital Dhaka with a view to enhancing air connectivity and establishing Bangladesh as a centre of air communication between the eastern and western countries.

The information was revealed at the second meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Undertakings held at Sangsad Bhaban here today with its chairman ASM Feroz in the chair, an official release said.

The meeting informed that Japanese firm – Nippon Koei Co. Ltd – was conducting a feasibility study on the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman International Airport Project.

Members of the committee – Mostafizur Rahman, Ismat Ara Sadique, Md Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Mirza Azam, Muhammad Nazrul Islam and Mohibur Rahman Manik – attended the meeting.

The meeting discussed the overall activities of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) and the Civil Aviation Authority in detail.

During the meeting, the committee members said the BWDB constructed 52 embankments in Sunamganj, Sylhet, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, Netrakona and Kishoreganj under its different projects this dry season to protect paddy field in the haor region from flash flood.

To implement the Bangladesh Delta Plan-2100, they said, different projects have been formulated to excavate rivers, canals and wetlands in the country’s all districts aiming to increase the navigability of rivers, the water reserving capacity of wetland as well as the groundwater recharge and conserve biodiversity across the country.

Senior officials of the Water Resources Ministry and the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry were present during the meeting.
