Five new records set in 29th national swimming

DHAKA, March 10, 2019 (BSS)- Five new national records were set on the opening day of the 29th National Swimming, Diving and Water polo competition here today.

Organized by Bangladesh Swimming Federation and sponsored by Max Group, a total of eight events of the completion held on the first day at the Syed Nazrul Islam National Swimming Complex in Mirpur.

Bangladesh Navy took the solo lead with six gold, five silver and three bronzes. Bangladesh Army follows them with two gold, two silver and five bronzes. Bagura Swimming Center however achieves one silver so far.

Navy’s Zunaina Ahmed alone set two records in female 200-meter free style and 200-meter back stroke. While she clocked 02:19.89 to set the new record in 200-meter free style while the old record was 02:25.56, she took 02:40.75 in 200-meter back stroke to create the new national record.

Bangladesh Army’s Jewel Ahmed timed 02:16.13 to create new record, breaking 02:16.76 in male 200-m back stroke.

In 100-meter butter fly stroke, Navy’s Mahmudunnabi Nahid took 00:56.82 to set new record while the old timing was 00:57.50, achieved by Jewell Ahmed in 2003. Navy’s Sonia Akter Tumpa created new record in 100-meter butter fly stroke with a timing of 01:08.95, breaking her own old record of 01:10.04 in 2014.

Secretary of Youth and Sports Ministry Dr. Jafar Uddin will inaugurate the competition as chief guest on Monday (March 11) and Masud Karim, the secretary of National Sports Council will present as special guest.
