DHAKA, Mar 6, 2019 (BSS) – Election Commission (EC) has issued special directives to the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SP) asking them to keep the upcoming 5th Upazila Parishad elections free from all kinds of influence.

“The EC is committed to hold the upcoming Upazila Parishad polls in a free, fair and peaceful manner. But it believes that holding of fair elections in the country is impossible without help of the field-level administrations. All concerned of the administrations are requested to be aware in this regard,” read the directives sent to the DCs and SPs signed by EC Joint Secretary Farhad Ahmmad Khan.

The EC urged the district administrations and law enforcement agencies concerned to ensure security so that the all candidates can enjoy equal rights, and voters can exercise franchise safely.

According to the directives, the executive magistrates will take legal actions without any hesitation against those who will breach the electoral code of conduct.

“The EC does not expect negligence of electoral duties from anyone. It hopes that local administrations, police and other law enforcement agencies will perform duties sincerely,” the directives read.

If any irregularities take place in the elections, the responsible person will be brought under accountability, it said.
