JS passes Bangladesh EPZ Labour Bill, 2019

SANGSAD BHABAN, Feb 27, 2019 (BSS) – Bangladesh EPZ Labour Bill, 2019 was
passed in the Jatiya Sangsad today to ensure better welfare of the labourers
employed in the industries set up at Export Processing Zones (EPZ).

Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque, (In-charge of Prime
Minister’s Office in Parliament) moved the bill in the House, which was
unanimously passed by voice votes with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in
the chair.

Piloting the bill, he said the proposed bill will ensure fixation of minimum
wage, recruitment, owner-labour relation, salary payment, accidental
compensation, healthcare and security.

According to the bill, the EPZ workers will enjoy the freedom of associations
to realise their demands.

Earlier, the House sent the bill to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on
the Labour Ministry for further scrutiny and asked for returning it back in
the House after 15 working days. Accordingly the Standing Committee placed its
report in the House with its recommendation to pass the bill.
