SANGSAD BHABAN, Feb 25, 2019 (BSS) – State Minister for Water Resource Zahid
Faruque today said the government has taken ‘Bangladesh Delta Plan-2100” in
order to check the saline intrusion in the coastal region.

The State minister said this while responding to a starred question placed by
treasury bench lawmaker AKM Rahmattullah of Dhaka-11 in the Jatiya Sangsad
with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Under the plan, the state minister said the government will design and
implement the project as per the strategy which would help check the
infiltration of the salinity, storm and tidal waves through active management
of the polders at the coastal region.

To this end, he said development of other physical infrastructures including
up-gradation of seventeen polders in seven coastal districts is going on under
the “Coastal Embankment Development Project, Phase-1 (CEIP-1)” with the credit
of the World Bank.

Even the rehabilitation of 139 polders installed by the Bangladesh Water
Development Board will also be implemented in phase.

“If the project is implemented, then the spread of salinity in the coastal
region could be resisted, the state minister added.

In the first phase, the Coastal Embankment Development Project, (CEIP-1) would
complete by June 2020, he added.
