Khalid seeks WB support for regional waterways, roads communication

DHAKA, Feb 19, 2019 (BSS)- State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury today said sought cooperation from the World Bank (WB) to strengthen regional communications on roads and waterways.

“The incumbent government is putting emphasis on strengthening regional communication,” he told a meeting with WB officials on Bangladesh Regional Waterway Transport Project-1 and Bangladesh Regional Connectivity Project-1 at the ministry conference room.

WB Acting Country Director to Bangladesh Robert J Saun led the delegation.

Other members are- Practice Manager Shomik Raj Mehndiratta, Program Leader Sanjay Shrivastava, Lead Transport Economist Richard Martin Humphreys, Senior Transport Specialist Rajes Rohatgi and Program Coordinator Dilshad S Dossani.

The state minister said development of waterways is must for strengthening regional communication. He hoped the WB will always stay beside the government for the development of land ports and in excavation of waterways.

“The government is implementing many mega projects with domestic finance but the WB assistance would further strengthen regional connectivity on waterways and land ports will be more pace” said the state minister.

Additional Secretary of Shipping Ministry Bhola Nath Dey, Chairman of Bangladesh Land Port Authority Tapan Kumar Chakraborty, BIWTA Chairman Commodore M Mozammel Haque, Joint-Secretary of Economic Relations Department (ERD) Abdul Bak and Project Director Selim Hasan, among others, were present at the meeting.
