1.33 lakh mobile phone users switch operators

DHAKA, Feb 14, 2019 (BSS) – Since introduction of the mobile number portability (MNP) service in October last year, a total of 133,621 users have switched operators till January this year.

According to the latest statistics of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the country’s second largest operator Robi received highest 93,828 customers from other three operators while lost second highest of 23,911 customers.

The report also showed another 14,896 customers have tried to leave Robi, but they failed due to procedural challenges.

Besides, the country’s third largest operator Banglalink lost second highest number of 45,092 customers against the gaining of 25,615 customers to its network. However, another 44,031 customers of the operators had attempted to switch but they were barred for different reasons, as per the report.

Bangladesh’s leading operator, Grameenphone registered only 12,346 customers to its network while highest 62,317 customers have left it and the second highest number, after Banglalink, of 39,857 customers also tried to leave Grameenphone, but failed to do so.

On the other hand, the lone state-owned operator Teletalk was able to collect the lowest 2,002 customers from the other three operators but 2,301 customers also have left them.

Robi’s Head of Corporate and Regulatory Affairs Shahed Alam said Robi’s superior quality of network and service experience has convinced the significant majority of the subscribers who have joined its network using the MNP service.

“In order to honour the trust our subscribers have placed on us, we will continue to invest heavily in our network and overall service experience,” he added.

Shahed alleged that the corporate customers are still struggling to avail the MNP service. “Since MNP service was launched, only organization has been able to enjoy the MNP facility so far,” he said, adding, “Many subscribers who have availed the facility are not receiving OTP service from various banks.”

He hoped the regulator will take necessary steps to address these problems.
