Tazul for master-plan to check river pollution in Dhaka, Ctg

DHAKA, Feb 14, 2019 (BSS) – LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul
Islam today underscored the need for integrated action for implementing the
master-plan for checking pollution and increasing navigability of rivers that
surround Dhaka and Chattogram.

“Rivers in our country are connected to one another. We have to prevent
pollution in rivers in Dhaka and its adjoining areas and in Chattogram
including Karnaphuli river and check illegal occupation of riverbanks to
restore the normal flow of rivers and make our habitat a better place to
live,” he said.

The minister was addressing a meeting on formulation of a master-plan to
prevent pollution in rivers at the Local Government Division (LGD) conference
room at the secretariat, said a press release.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, State Minister for
Water Resources Zaheed Farooque, Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Dr Selina
Hayat Ivy, Chattogram City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin and LGD Senior
Secretary SM Ghulam Farooque attended the meeting.

Tazul stressed on construction of eco-parks and roads to increase the
aesthetic beauty of rivers after evacuating illegal establishment on the
river banks.

He said industrial waste and other sources of pollution in Buriganga,
Turag, Shitalakshya, Balu and Tongi Khal rivers, should be recycled.

The draft master-plan has been divided into four parts as per tenure- –
one-year crash-programme, two-year short-term, five-year medium-term and 10-
year long-term.
