BGB clash with “cattle smugglers” leaves 3 dead in Thakurgaon

THAKURGAON, Feb 12, 2019 (BSS) – At least three people were killed as
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) today clashed with alleged cattle smugglers at
a frontier village at Haripur upazila of the district, officials said.

Police and BGB officials said the border guards were visibly forced to use
their guns in self defence as alleged cattle smugglers along with ordinary
villagers attacked them after they seized four “smuggled cows” from a
household at Bahrampur village.

They said one of the dead was a 12-year old boy.

“The incident took place at around 12 noon but the situation is now calm .
. . additional police and BGB forces were deployed in the area,” officer-in-
charge of Haripur Police Station Amiruzzaman said.

Commanding officer of BGB’s Thakurgaon-based 50 Battalion Lieutenant
Colonel Tuhin Md Masud said the BGB men were forced to open fire in self-
defence as cattle smugglers along with villagers attacked them with sharp
weapons while they were returning to the base seizing the cows.

“The BGB members first fired blank shoots after four of our men were
injured but eventually confronted the attackers directly as the situation
went beyond control,” he said.

Masud, however, called it an “untoward incident”.
